His first film review for “The Village Voice” was in 1977. He’s been there ever since, and as senior film critic since 1986. Additionally, he’s a professor of film studies at New York University, and the author of a wide-range of scholarly film books, from “Midnight Movies” (with Jonathan Rosenbaum) to “Bridge of Light: Yiddish Film Between Two Worlds.” His collected essays are entitled “Vulgar Modernism: Writing on Film and Other Media.”
