He was a film critic for “The Fort Worth Star-Telegram” and the “Detroit Free Press” before becoming the first African-American critic for “The New York Times,” Since leaving the “Times” in 2004, Mitchell has appeared regularly on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” hosted the television shows, “The Treatment” and “Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence,” and produced “The Blacklist Project,” living portraits on video of prominent African-Americans.
